Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced plans to hold protest rallies across Dhaka and all divisional cities on Saturday, October 25, pressing for the implementation of their five-point demand.
In a statement issued on Thursday (October 23), Jamaat’s Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar urged leaders and activists at all levels of the party to play an active role in ensuring the success of the pre-scheduled program.
He mentioned that the five-point public demand was presented to the nation on October 19 at a press conference held at the National Press Club on behalf of eight political parties currently campaigning to transform Bangladesh into a just, accountable, and democratic state. During the event, the coalition also announced the fourth phase of their three-day protest program.
The party’s official Facebook page has also shared details of the demands, which are as follows:
1. Issuance of the necessary constitutional order to implement the July National Charter, and holding a referendum on it by November.
2. Introduction of a proportional representation (PR) system in both the upper and lower houses for the upcoming national elections.
3. Ensuring a level playing field for all political parties to guarantee free, fair, and credible elections.
4. Bringing to justice those responsible for the current government’s oppression, mass killings, and corruption.
5. Declaring the activities of the autocratic ally Jatiya Party and the 14-party coalition illegal.
Party sources have confirmed that preparations are already underway among Jamaat’s leaders and activists to carry out Saturday’s announced protest program successfully.
