Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over the brutal killing of scrap trader Chand Mia Sohag near Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka, describing the incident as a sign of “decaying fascism.”
In a statement issued on Friday (July 11), Jamaat’s Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar said,
“On July 9 around 5:30 PM, a businessman was mercilessly killed in broad daylight by being struck on the head with a stone in front of Mitford Hospital. Following the murder, individuals were seen dancing over the body in celebration. This is unthinkable in any civilized society.”
Citing reports from various newspapers, he alleged,
“According to published information, several leaders of Chawk Bazar Thana unit of Jubo Dal demanded extortion from the victim. He was killed for refusing to pay.”
Porwar added, “This incident reveals the horrifying consequence of political groups nurturing extortionists and criminals. The public’s safety is at serious risk under such forces. If strict action is not taken immediately, the country may spiral into chaos.”
He called on the government to swiftly arrest those responsible, ensure exemplary punishment, and take effective steps to restore law and order. Jamaat also offered prayers for the victim’s soul and extended sympathy to his bereaved family.
