Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has reaffirmed that the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election cannot be postponed and will be held in February as scheduled. He alleged that “a certain quarter” is attempting to delay the polls.
Speaking to the press on Sunday (August 31) evening after a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the state guesthouse Jamuna, Mirza Fakhrul said the Chief Adviser had assured them that the election would proceed on schedule and had conveyed the same assurance to the nation.
“The date that has been announced for the election will remain unchanged. Our discussion with the Chief Adviser was fruitful,” he told reporters.
Responding to a journalist’s question about reports linking the Chief Adviser’s recent London trip with election date negotiations, Fakhrul dismissed the claims as “entirely baseless.” He added, “The Chief Adviser has every right to speak with the leader of the country’s largest political party.”
On the recent attack against Gono Odhikar Parishad leader Nurul Haque Nur, the BNP Secretary General condemned the incident as a “heinous act.” He expressed concern that such attacks could be part of an attempt to delay the electoral process.
The BNP delegation at the meeting included standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, and Professor AZM Zahid Hossain
