Following the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) elections, the democratic process is now making its way to private universities. The election schedule for the Gono University Central Students’ Union (GUSU) has been announced. After seven years of anticipation, the vote will be held on September 25. The schedule outlines the dates for publishing the voter list, nomination collection, and scrutiny. The Election Commission has stated that all necessary preparations will be taken to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election.
The spread of democratic practice has now reached the sphere of private universities. In continuation of DUCSU and JUCSU, the Election Commission of Gono University has announced the schedule for the Central Students’ Union (GUSU) election. This will end a long seven-year wait, with the much-anticipated polls set to be held on September 25.
On Monday (August 11) at 3:00 PM, the Chief Election Commissioner and Associate Professor Rafiqul Alam formally announced the election schedule in front of journalists at the GUSU Election Commission Office, located in Room 310, Block A of the university’s academic building.
Key Dates in the Schedule:
August 11: Schedule announcement
August 17: Publication of the draft voter list
August 21 (10:00 AM–3:00 PM): Submission of objections to the draft voter list
August 25: Publication of the final voter list
August 26–28 (until 3:00 PM): Distribution of nomination forms
August 31–September 1: Submission of nomination forms
September 2–4: Scrutiny of nomination forms
September 8: Publication of the preliminary list of candidates
September 9 (until 3:00 PM): Submission and hearing of objections against candidates
September 11: Last date for withdrawal of nomination forms
September 14: Publication of the final list of candidates
September 25: Voting and announcement of results
Although the campaign and code of conduct schedule has not yet been determined, Chief Election Commissioner Rafiqul Alam stated, “The remaining matters will be announced in due course. All necessary measures will be taken to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election while upholding the democratic process.”
