Pakistan Defence Minister warns India over military action

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has warned that any future military action by India against Pakistan could lead to severe consequences. He claimed that such a situation could even alter India’s geographical and political position.

He made the remarks during a talk show on Geo News, responding to recent statements by Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi.

Khawaja Asif claimed that India’s position weakened during a recent 19-day conflict and that it is now trying to cover up that setback.

According to him, the confrontation had a negative impact on India’s internal prestige and confidence.

He further stated that during the military escalation, Pakistan carried out counterattacks on several Indian military targets and claimed to have shot down fighter jets. He added that the conflict, which lasted for around three days, eventually ended in a ceasefire through international mediation.

The Pakistani defence minister also claimed that India’s influence in regional politics is no longer the same and that its relations with neighbouring countries have changed. He added that Pakistan is now in a relatively stronger position in the region, which India is finding difficult to accept.

Responding to questions about a possible India–Israel alignment, Khawaja Asif said the two countries may share strategic interests and suggested that Israel does not want the rise of any other power in the region.

Tensions remain high along the Lebanon–Israel border despite ongoing discussions on a possible ceasefire. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that one Israeli military officer was killed in an anti-tank missile strike carried out in southern Lebanon by Hezbollah.

The deceased officer has been identified as Captain Itan Shmuel Lemberg, a member of the IDF’s 7th Armored Brigade. According to military sources, he was killed on the spot when a tank was targeted during an operation in southern Lebanon.

Following the attack, Israeli forces launched retaliatory air and artillery strikes, claiming to have targeted Hezbollah military infrastructure. Military activity in the border region has also increased.

Earlier, a ceasefire proposal mediated by the United States between Lebanon and Israel had been put forward, but the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah rejected it. The group’s leader, Naim Qassem, warned that rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel would continue if strikes on Lebanon do not stop.

Meanwhile, renewed strikes have been reported in several parts of Lebanon. State media said multiple attacks took place in the south and east, causing casualties. The Israeli military has also issued warnings restricting civilian movement in border areas due to escalating tensions.

Hakan Fidan has arrived in Dhaka on a two-day official visit, marking the first visit by a Turkish foreign minister to Bangladesh in nearly six years. Diplomats are viewing the trip as an important step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.

He landed in Dhaka on Thursday night, where he was received at the airport by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam was also present to welcome the Turkish minister.

On Friday, Hakan Fidan is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Khalilur Rahman. The meeting is expected to focus on trade, mutual cooperation, and several regional issues involving both countries.

Later the same day, the Turkish foreign minister will travel to Cox's Bazar to visit Rohingya refugee camps. He is expected to observe the humanitarian situation there and review Turkey’s ongoing assistance programs for displaced Rohingyas.

The visit is also considered significant because it is the first trip to Bangladesh by a foreign minister from a major global power since the country’s new government took office. On Saturday, Hakan Fidan is expected to meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Prime Minister’s Office for high-level discussions.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that the American military campaign against Iran, known as “Operation Epic Fury,” has officially ended.

He made the announcement on Wednesday (June 3) during a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee in the US Congress, where lawmakers questioned the administration about ongoing tensions in the Middle East and Washington’s future strategy in the region.

Responding to lawmakers, Rubio said the operation was aimed at weakening Iran’s military capabilities and that the United States is no longer carrying out continuous strikes inside the country. He added that any future military action would be considered defensive rather than part of an offensive campaign.

Rubio also claimed that the operation caused major damage to Iran’s defense industry facilities, missile-launch capabilities, and drone stockpiles.

Meanwhile, security conditions in the Middle East remain tense, particularly over the Strait of Hormuz and the continued presence of US forces in the region, raising concerns internationally.

According to analysts, Washington’s announcement could have significant implications for regional politics, security dynamics, and the global energy market.

U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has agreed to step away from its nuclear weapons program. He made the remarks during an interview on the “Pod Force One” podcast published on Wednesday (June 3).

Trump said the United States would never allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons and claimed that Tehran had also agreed not to possess such arms. He described the issue as the most important aspect of the ongoing discussions.

During the interview, Trump also commented on Iran’s military capabilities. He claimed that Iran’s naval and air power had weakened and that the country’s military strength had declined compared to previous years. He further alleged that Iran’s economy is facing serious difficulties, with high inflation worsening the situation.

Responding to questions about tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the possibility of a blockade, Trump said he does not believe the situation will last long. He expressed confidence that a resolution could come soon and added that the United States currently holds a strategic advantage regarding the Iran issue.

Speaking about Iran’s leadership, Trump said there has been growing discussion over the influence of Mojtaba Khamenei in major state decisions. He described it as part of Iran’s long-standing power structure.

Trump also claimed that communication with Iran’s top leadership remains positive and did not rule out the possibility of direct talks between the two sides if conditions become favorable in the future.

At least one person has been killed and several others injured following a drone and missile attack on Kuwait International Airport, according to the country’s Foreign Ministry. The attack also caused damage to key airport infrastructure and diplomatic facilities.

In a statement posted on social media platform X on Wednesday (June 3), the Kuwaiti government said the assault targeted civilian and sensitive installations, including airport terminals. The attack resulted in casualties and significant damage to multiple facilities.

According to the ministry, some of the affected structures were linked to embassies and diplomatic missions.

Blaming Iran for the incident, Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry said ballistic missiles and drones were used in what it described as a series of ongoing attacks. The ministry strongly condemned the strikes.

Kuwait also warned that it reserves the full right to take necessary measures in response to any attack against its sovereignty and national security.

Iran has not yet issued any official response regarding the allegations.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the security situation in the Gulf region.

Israel has reportedly been added to a special United Nations monitoring list over allegations of wartime sexual violence, a move that has sparked renewed international debate and tension.

The decision triggered a strong reaction from Israel. Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon announced that Israel would suspend all forms of communication with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He accused the United Nations of spreading what he described as false and biased claims against Israel.

In response, the United Nations stated that the door for dialogue and discussion remains open. The organization said the allegations are being treated seriously and that further investigation and review processes are continuing.

UN Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem emphasized that allegations of violence against women and children during armed conflicts must be handled with utmost seriousness and called for more rigorous investigations into the claims.

Earlier, a UN report had mentioned allegations of abuse and sexual violence against Palestinian detainees by Israeli security forces, claims that Israel has strongly denied.

The broader backdrop to the controversy remains the Gaza war that began in 2023. Since the outbreak of the conflict, relations between Israel and the United Nations have remained increasingly strained. The latest development has further intensified tensions and reignited global discussions surrounding the issue.

According to a report published on Thursday (May 28), the proposed agreement still requires final approval from U.S. President Donald Trump. If approved, the move could mark a significant breakthrough in diplomatic efforts that had remained stalled for several weeks.

U.S. officials said several aspects of the understanding are still under discussion. It also remains unclear whether the 60-day extension would serve as a final deadline for negotiations, as the current ceasefire technically remains in place for an indefinite period.

The possible agreement reportedly includes measures to ensure uninterrupted international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Discussions are also ongoing regarding the easing of U.S. naval restrictions imposed on Iranian ports.

Iran maintains that the Strait of Hormuz lies between the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, and therefore should be jointly managed by both countries. The United States, however, continues to oppose any Iranian control or toll system in the strategic waterway.

In recent weeks, scattered clashes and retaliatory strikes in the Gulf region had raised concerns over a possible collapse of the ceasefire. Limited exchanges of attacks between the two sides were also reported on Thursday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that the United States’ “excessive demands” have become the main obstacle to the ongoing peace negotiations. He made the remarks during a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General António Guterres regarding the Pakistan-mediated talks.

According to an aljazeera.com⁠ report published on Saturday (May 23), Araghchi accused the United States of breaking commitments, maintaining a dual stance, and exerting military pressure. Despite this, Tehran is continuing to participate seriously in the negotiations under Pakistan’s initiative.

Citing Iran’s Foreign Ministry, tasnimnews.com⁠ reported that Guterres emphasized the importance of a diplomatic solution and opposed interference in the sovereignty of any country.

Meanwhile, discussions over a possible U.S.-Iran agreement have intensified further. In this context, Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir has arrived in Tehran.

The United States has suffered major losses to its advanced MQ-9 Reaper drone fleet amid the ongoing conflict with Iran. International media reports say nearly 20 percent of the U.S. Air Force’s total Reaper drones have been destroyed.

Citing Bloomberg data, middleeasteye.net⁠ reported that Iran has so far shot down or destroyed Reaper drones worth nearly $1 billion. Some were reportedly downed in the air, while others were damaged during attacks on U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf region.

The MQ-9 Reaper is one of Washington’s key drones used for surveillance and missile strikes. Reports suggest the U.S. has lost around 30 Reaper drones during the conflict, exceeding previous official estimates.

Meanwhile, the cost of the war is also rising rapidly. According to a Pentagon official, U.S. military operations against Iran have already cost nearly $29 billion.

U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier claimed that Iran’s air defense system had been completely weakened. However, the repeated downing of American drones has raised new questions about that assertion. Reports also claim Iran has strengthened its defense capabilities with support from Russia and China.
