Professor Yunus said, “The July National Charter is a historic achievement in our nation’s life. It is not merely a document but a foundation for the stability of democracy and a guide for the future.” According to him, the charter will play a vital role in establishing a more accountable state.
The National Consensus Commission, led by the Chief Adviser, began its work on February 12 this year, and its tenure ended on October 31. The commission’s goal was to develop the necessary reforms and structural changes to strengthen the foundation of democracy.
Dr. Yunus added that the people now expect changes that will foster democratic culture, prevent the recurrence of authoritarianism, and ensure citizens’ rights. He said, “The most encouraging aspect is that we carried out these reforms ourselves—without any external influence. In the past, dialogues involved foreign mediation, but this time we reached consensus independently.”
He further stated that after the July mass uprising, the country’s political parties realized that the nation’s crises must be solved internally. Therefore, all parties came together, engaged in discussions, and reached consensus. In his view, this serves as a shining example of Bangladesh’s unity for the world to see.
Expressing gratitude to political leaders, the Chief Adviser said, “Those who worked tirelessly to implement this charter have turned the impossible into possible.”
He also noted that the July National Charter now stands as a global precedent. “Such a precedent is rare in world history—where a country has created a roadmap for political reform through internal unity,” said Yunus.
He specifically thanked the Commission’s Vice-Chair Professor Ali Riaz, members Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Dr. Iftikharuzzaman, Safar Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr. Mohammad Ayub Mia, and Special Assistant Monir Haider. He also expressed gratitude to media personnel who, month after month, conveyed the Commission’s work to the public in clear language.
Finally, the Chief Adviser said, “Our unity is the greatest strength in this journey of state reform. Fascist groups are trying to divide the nation, but unity will defeat them. To build the future, all political parties must remain united—regardless of any obstacles.”
